Luther McDowell (Mr.Mac) Obituary

Luther Levin McDowell (Mr. Mc) was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, Soldier, Independent Business Owner, and Federal Government Civilian employee.

Mr. Mc was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on July 17, 1936 to Harriett Rouse.  He enlisted to serve in the United States Army on August 22, 1955 and retired as a Master Sergeant on August 1, 1982. His tours of duty included various stateside locations and he also served overseas tours in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam.  While serving, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Campaign Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and a Purple Heart for his wounds.  Additionally, he was presented the Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and also received an Expert Weapons Qualification Badge (M-16 Rifle). He faithfully served a total of 27 years and was honorably discharged.

Upon retiring from the military, he was manager of the Ramada Inn located on the 301 Bypass; and later was a small business owner of Mac's Place, a restaurant located on Yadkin Road. Afterwards, he served nearly 10 years in the Federal Civil Service as a Security Guard at Womack Army Medical Center, and as a Supply Technician at the United States Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he received numerous awards and commendations, and made many lifetime friends.

Mr. Mc lived a wonderful, active life, one of his biggest hobbies was bowling with the “Hammer & Crew” and other bowling leagues and playing pool with his adopted son and daughter Lee and Adrian Manigo.   He will be dearly missed by all his family and his many friends.

He leaves behind to lovingly forever cherish his memory:   Wife Sharon McDowell; three sons, Lin McDowell, Alfonsa (Juleen) McDowell, Steven (Patty) Shorter; three daughters, Harriett McDowell, Sandra (William) Boozer, Teresa (Bill) Logan; a brother Robert Rouse; two sisters Charlotte Bland, Diane Saunders; and grandchildren LaTasha, Monica, Marcedez, Jazmin, Ladavius, William, Rose Marie, Topaz, Antonio, Jimmy, Yeremiah, Jordan, Timothy, Tyree, Ashley and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his first wife Josephine Elizabeth McDowell; his mother Harriett Rouse; his three brothers, James Rouse, Fleetwood McDowell, Melvin Rouse; and his sister Constance House.
